Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCLA

We are seeking applications from qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship performing translation cancer research studying mitochondria biology and metabolism in lung cancer in the laboratory of Dr. David Shackelford in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine. Candidates will need to have expertise in molecular and cellular biology and basic biochemistry. Prior experience working with animal models such as genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) and/or patient derived xenografts (PDXs) is encouraged but not required. The job will require performing both in vitro cell line work and in vivo work in GEMMs and PDXs. This includes performing lung tumor induction in GEMMs, lung tumor implantation in PDXs, dosing of mice in therapeutic studies, performing micro PET-CT imaging on mice, microscopy, biochemical analysis of tumor tissue, metabolic analysis of experiments such as isotopomeric tracing and respirometry as well as executing the analysis of all studies. Lastly, the candidate will be expected to analyze and prepare data for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as present at scientific meetings. This study will require outstanding verbal and written communication skills. The work is highly translational and requires comfort working in a multi-discipline team environment with experts in cancer metabolism, mitochondrial biology, PET imaging, radiochemistry, thoracic surgery, oncology and pathology.

Qualifications: This is an NIH Training Postdoctoral Training Fellowship and candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent and US citizenship or permanent residency.

UCLA Post-doc in Psychoneuroimmunology & Depression Research

The UCLA Laboratory for Stress Assessment and Research (PI: George Slavich) seeks to hire a full-time post-doctoral fellow as soon as possible. This is an NIMH-funded position, with full salary and benefits. Applicants should be fMRI trained and interested in studying neural, immunologic, and genomic mechanisms underlying risk for depression and related health problems in adolescence. Responsibilities will include helping lead and manage an existing multi-level fMRI study protocol, with an outstanding team of RAs; scanning participants; processing and analyzing fMRI data; examining associations between neural, immunologic, genomic, and/or behavioral data; presenting at conferences; and preparing manuscripts for publication. Necessary qualifications: Ph.D. or expected Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, or related field; strong prior training in social, affective, and/or cognitive neuroscience, with the ability to independently scan participants; strong fMRI task development and programming skills; evidence of past scientific productivity and future promise; and an interest in immunology and/or social genomics. Postdoctoral Scholar – Employee (Radiology)

The Department of Radiological Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in multi-dimensional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging and knowledge of MATLAB, C/C++ and MRS/MRI pulse programming skills.

The applicant must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree relating to MR Physics or biomedical Physics or Biomedical Engineering, and must have hands-on experience in developing novel MR pulse sequence and post-processing algorithms. Previous experience in Data Acquisition and Post-processing in Vivo Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and MRI, accelerated MR spectral acquisition (echo-planar /radial/concentric circular/spiral encoding) and post-processing using non-linear reconstruction/compressed sensing is desired. Postdoctoral fellowship in Neuropsychiatric Genomics: Biomarkers of Depression Treatment Response

Our interdisciplinary research group is looking for a self-motivated postdoctoral fellow with a strong computational background to join an initiative aimed at identifying neurobiological changes associated with response to fast-acting treatment interventions for depression. Our current projects incorporate genomic, clinical, neurocognitive, and neuroimaging measures in longitudinal studies, including total sleep deprivation, serial ketamine infusion, and electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of severe, treatment-resistant depression. The applicant would be primarily responsible for the management and analysis of microarray gene expression data, but would also conduct integrative analyses in collaboration with other team members. The fellow will be expected to conduct several different kinds of analyses of the data (e.g., differential expression, WGCNA, predictive modeling), which will require staying up to date on developments in the field and analysis packages. The fellow will have opportunities to perform innovative studies, and will be expected to present/publish the results in scientific conferences/journals and participate in grant writing. The fellow will also have access to existing datasets that provide additional opportunities to explore relationships between neurocognitive function and genomic activity.

The postdoc should have completed a PhD at a major university in bioinformatics,  computational biology, neuroscience, biostatistics, computer science or related disciplines, with a strong research background, ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, and interest in applying these skills to the topic of depression. This position is collaborative and requires working with individuals from a range of backgrounds. A computational background and ability to handle large data sets is required, with experience in analysis and interpretation of omics data.

Additional qualifications:

 Experience in Unix/Linux shell

 Excellent skills in programming, and proficiency using R for statistical analysis

 Familiarity or experience with array-based genomic data

 Excellent oral and written communication skills

 Experience in psychiatry or neuroscience preferred

 Two-year commitment minimum

The position is based in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences. The fellow will be primarily supervised by Dr. Eliza Congdon; given the interdisciplinary nature of the position, opportunities for supervision are also available through collaborating PIs based on the applicants background and career plans. This position is supported by the UCLA Depression Grand Challenge – a campus-wide initiative aimed at cutting the burden of depression in half by 2050 primarily through the collection of a 100,000-person cohort.

Postdoctoral Research Position in Immunology

The UCLA Immunogenetics Center, Department of Pathology, University of California, Los Angeles (www.hla.ucla.edu) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to join a multidisciplinary team of investigators from UCLA, UCLA-Harbor and Duke University in a translational research project focused on characterizing immunity to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The project involves profiling innate and adaptive immune responses to understand the mechanisms underlying persistent bacteremia and to identify and validate a signature of persistence or resolution of infection. The postdoctoral fellow will generate high throughput immunophenoptyping, genomic and transcriptomic data and use systems-based statistical and computational immunology to define altered host:pathogen interactions and the role of antibiotics in MRSA persistence. The technologies to be used in this project include multiplex cytokine/chemokines, multiparameter flow cytometry, genomic and transcriptomic platforms, and in vitro manipulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

The candidate will benefit from a highly collaborative and diverse team of investigators including experts in MRSA, immune profiling, statistics, computational immunology at the University of California Los Angeles. Applicant must be an immunology, cell, and/or molecular biology Ph.D. candidate or recent Ph.D. graduate (within the past 2 years).

Experience with tissue culture, immunological assays, and flow cytometry is expected; whereas experience in multidimensional data set analysis is a plus. Good command of the English language (both speaking and writing) is a must. The applicant will be expected to prepare/publish manuscripts, present data at local and international meetings, and participate in seminars/meetings of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and the Immunity, Inflammation, Infection and Transplantation Theme.

The team focuses on identifying genetic determinants of drug response in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The successful candidate will perform candidate-gene analyses, genetic risk score analyses and large-scale meta-analyses. He/she will work on already collected data, which include clinical outcome measures data of cognitive and executive functions, GWAS and medications data. The phenotypes of interest include mostly drug response assessed by longitudinal changes in cognitive function, progression from MCI to dementia and other quantitative endophenotypes of Alzheimer’s disease. This work will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sophie Sokolow

Los Angeles Area Health Services Research Training Program Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Los Angeles Area Health Services Research Training Program postdoctoral fellowship is a joint initiative of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, RAND Health, The USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics, and the VA Los Angeles Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation, Implementation and Policy.  It is supported by a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The program provides comprehensive training and experience to highly-qualified postdoctoral trainees so that they may effectively engage in and lead research and implementation activities aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of the U.S. health care system.
