Tax Workshps for Non Residents and Tax Support for Residents for Tax purposes - Spring 2008

Attention UCLA Postdoctoral Scholars:

That time of year is drawing closer when individuals need to begin preparing their federal and state tax returns, which are due on April 15th. This message serves as a notice of resources that will be available to the UCLA community should you have questions about your income and/or the process of reporting it to the tax boards. Please note that the University does NOT have tax preparers on staff and cannot assist individuals with their returns.

FOR NONRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES

Free workshops will be offered by the Dashew Center for International Students & Scholars:

Thursday, April 3rd from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, 215 Bradley Hall (Dashew Center)

These workshops are co-sponsored by Graduate Division, UCLA Payroll Office and the Dashew Center. FOR RESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program at UCLA is designed to help the UCLA community properly prepare their annual federal and state income tax returns free of charge. It will begin on March 28th on the 3rd Floor of Ackerman. Services will be offered Monday through Friday, with their hours still to be determined. This service is staffed by volunteers and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so no appointments can be made with them. Please note that the VITA Program is ONLY available to U.S. residents, as the volunteers are not trained to prepare non-resident returns. For more information, please refer to their website at: http://www.uclavita.org. .

OFFICIAL & UNOFFICIAL REPORTING FORMS

If you are an employee of the University, you should have already received a W-2 Form from the University. If you did not receive your W-2, you can print your W-2 form using At Your Service Online https://atyourserviceonline.ucop.edu/ayso/ . Please note, only those postdoctoral scholars receiving salary should expect to receive a W-2 form.

If you are receiving fellowship payments as a non-resident for tax purposes, then you will be receiving a 1042-S Form reporting this income and any amounts withheld for federal taxes. The 1042-S Form is also sent to non-resident employees who claim tax treaty benefits. The 1042-S Form has not been issued yet, but will be in the next week or two.

If you are receiving fellowship payments as a resident for tax purposes, then you should not expect to receive an official reporting form of this income. If you need an unofficial record of fellowship income received in tax year 2007, please send an email to Paolo Daniele at pdaniele [at] gdnet [dot] ucla [dot] edu and he will produce a report for you. Please allow at least two days to produce the report. Also, please note, since no official reporting of this income is done by the University, the report issued through my office is informational only and should not be mailed with your tax returns.

More information about fellowship income and fellowship tax reporting is available online at: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/gss/postdoc/pdtaxinfo.htm .

Lastly, if you have questions about your status or the type of income you received in tax year 2007, please feel free to contact Paolo Daniele at (310) 825-4247 pdaniele [at] gdnet [dot] ucla [dot] edu or or Ana Lebon Phone (310) 206-4309, Fax (310) 825-0017
