If I sign up for the HMO now, when my position is terminated and I revert to COBRA for health insurance - can I opt for the PPO at that time? Or can I only get the HMA through COBRA since that is what I had before my postdoc position terminated?
When your position is terminated and you want COBRA coverage (an 18-month extension of your previous employer's health benefits package), you do not have the option to switch your coverage to a more premium plan. You would have to COBRA your HMO benefits if that is what the University was providing for you before you terminated.
