Hello all,
I am looking into a partnership between SoPS and a free westwood-area dining website run by UCLA alums - http://bruinfood.com . They have a decent system of ratings and more importantly store-hours for even on-campus joints. Being free, they are a good service we can offer to the post-doc community.
A partnership should allow us to put their search form on our website and in exchange we drive traffic to theirs (which they can use as a fledgling site).
Anyone think this is a bad idea?
Thanks,
Ajay

May 24, 2005 - 8:38am — CatherineIs having their search engine on our site really an advantage over having a link? One of the complaints that I've heard about the SoPS website is that it's a little "busy" -i.e. there's a lot of stuff on display and so it's hard to find things. I don't really see the advantage in having the actual search engine on the site vs being able to open a link in a new tab.....but maybe I'm being techno-dense?

May 24, 2005 - 8:50am — adminBruinfood looks like an interesting site but the motivation for students to setup the site for free is not clear to me.
I am all for talking to them but I suspect Catherine may be right about the clutter. This does bring up serveral points that are slightly off topic.
1) We should get the Daily Bruin to write an article about us!
2) We need to sort out the Web Resources / Knowledge Base. My idea is to remove all the links from the Web Resources and put them into the Knowledge base with surrounding text to introduce and organize.

May 24, 2005 - 10:07am — ajayNormally this is done such that the results return their page withing a little "iframe" which is set in our site. The only and main benefit is that people will not get distracted and driven away from our site while we are still advertising theirs - we sometimes lose attention when things open in a new window.
Moreover, I was thinking that this would be a search-form under the web-resources page rather than the main page... you are right that things are quite busy and as we know Graham has been doing a great job of streamlining the site.
But you are right Catherine, as of now, knowing the link is perhaps good enough for people. Trying to forge a partnership seems a bit lame if people dont come to our site looking for food opinions.
Cheers!
Ajay

May 24, 2005 - 10:15am — CatherineI don't think that having the partnership is "lame" at all! But I think that we do need to work on streamlining the site so that it's easier to find things. Right now the Knowledge Base is where most (all?) of the info is, so we should make this as informative and easy to navigate as possible.

May 24, 2005 - 10:17am — adminOk so I took the liberty of moving the Web Resources into the Knowledge base - one less thing on the menu and more streamlined.
I need to sort out the committee forum permissions and work out how to do the notifications for committee members.

May 24, 2005 - 11:17am — ajayNice idea to integrate everything into the Knowledgebase... that is truly the spirit of a living document.
Lets hope that handling a wiki is not too much of a barrier for the non-techies. (For example, people on my lab wesite felt threatened and did not go beyond setting up their profile...)
:-D

(Ps: the "lame"ness was my retrospective judgement on the situation.)
