Shouldn't the advocacy committee as the representative for postdocs do something about the potential new change in housing policy for postdocs (the 2-year limit), not only asking people to send indivisual emails to the housing director? Why there is an increasing pressure from graduate students? Because they have a much better organized union as the representative to raise their voices. If we just send out our concerns as individuals, not many voices can be heard. I doubt that postdocs not living in the university housing would send emails. We would have more influence if we represent as a group.
As for the potential changes in the housing policy, 2-year limit for postdocs doesn't make sense to me. What's the average time for people to finish their postdocs at UCLA? I would say at least 4 years in life sciences. 2-year limit means we have to worry about looking for housing, commuting means, finding daycare for the kids not long after settling down. Both graduate students and postdocs contribute to the research and eduction of UCLA, shouldn't we have equal benefits from the school?
Re: potential new housing policy
July 19, 2005 - 2:16pm — LynnTThe Society of Postdoctoral Scholars is preparing a group response to the policy change. However, I think you are underestimating the effect of an outcry by the affected individuals.
If you have suggestions for how the SoPS can respond, please contribute them here or send them to the appropriate SoPS committee. The SoPS depends entirely on volunteers, so if an issue is important to you, please get involved

Thanks to all of you who have responded and I would like to invite you to continue the debate in this forum, rather than sending further emails directly to the housing administrators. We will discuss this issue at tomorrow's Advocacy Committee meeting, to which concerned postdocs are encouraged to attend (check the calendar for details).
