Does anyone have any recommendations for international plans / calling cards, other than the standard plans that are available through the larger phone companies like Verizon, etc.?
I would recommend using Skype from your computer to either a computer or a phone. The voice quality is better than a phone and the rates are very good - especially for people outside of the US calling a phone in the US. Calls from computer to computer are also free. You can even get a SkypeIn number so people can call your computer as if it were a phone line.
I use cards from keepcalling dot com - they have some really reasonable rates for eastern europe and asia. Its a nice backup to have even to use from your cellphone when you are travelling.
it is e.g. 3 ct per minute to europe
plus 53 cents connection fee,
for longer calls it is worth the price, the quality is good and the call gets chareged direcly to your home phone bill (e.g. verizon), no plan, no additional monthly fee.

I do not work for Skype but here is the URL:
http://www.skype.com
My experiences with calling cards have not been good - either the quality has been pretty bad or the minutes seem to disappear.
