Our current social activities VP, Gaynor Miller, is soon to leave us for a faculty position in England. Although this does prove that being social secretary isn't too bad for your career - it means that we need someone to step forward and take on the arduous task of showing up to the pub on time.

In the meantime here are some ideas for things we should / could / might do:

Next pub night - need to decide where. Joker was great and the informal atmosphere and distractions of pool tables brought a different crowd.

Lunch meal things. The meandering meals format needs a bit of a shake up. I was thinking about making the events even less formal by saying - why not come to this place at this time with your lab.... if you happen to meet other postdocs fine - if you want to sit on the other side of the courtyard - so be it.

Beach Volleyball - this has been floating around for a long time but we've never managed to achieve it. Maybe this weekend would be a good time to start.

Summer BBQ - last year's bbq was fairly good but slightly spoilt by the rapid onset of darkness. I will phone Sunset Rec and find out when the area is available. Some have suggested doing it at the weekend or having it somewhere off campus - eg. Dock Weiler Beach

Beach Volleyball - I tried

Beach Volleyball - I tried a beach volleyball Sunday afternoon but the weather was a little inclement and nobody came. We can try again now that the weather has improved.

Summer BBQ - I have phoned Sunset Rec several times but so far I have not received a reply in response to my request for available dates.

Pub Nights - Our last two pub nights have been held at bars where no, or little, food was available. The Joker was a great success and the pool tables and freeform arrangement allowed for greater interaction. The Arsenal was a little loud after 9pm and the seating caused the same restrictions as at a regular sitdown meal.

Lunch meals - Kerckhoff patio has been very busy recently - once the students are away for the summer we should start up regular meals around campus.

Seems like we'll have to find somewhere else for our BBQ this year. We could go for a beach - like Doc Weiler - where you can use fire pits. This would entail getting people to bring some of their own food but we could probably get expenses for some stuff.
