UC POSTDOCS: 5 MINUTES FOR $500
Unionization Effort Deadline – all UC POSTDOCS must read!!
We just found out this is LAST and ONLY chance to present your case to PERB, the board deciding on whether the current drive to unionize is legal. Even if you already sent a letter to RESCIND your signature, we still need your story.
If you signed a card and didn’t know that the card you sent meant you joined the union and that you want unionization as a UC postdoc, then you must email, fax, or give a hardcopy of your form by tomorrow (Wednesday, August 2) afternoon at 1 p.m. to:
Other UC campuses – you can email your story to concernedpostdocs [at] gmail [dot] com and/or badams [at] diabetes [dot] ucsf [dot] edu and/or mmoye [at] hansonbridgett [dot] com
Fax attn: M. Moye 415-541-9366.
One or two paragraphs are all we need. We need to know the story about WHEN you signed - ANYTHING you remember: who you talked to, what they said, their explanation of the card, any promises they made, the time of day, etc. Also state whether you would still sign the card now that you know the full meaning of the card.
Address the letter to PERB and date it and give your name. We need as many of these as possible to present the case that people were misinformed. If this is successful, we will save the %1.15 percent of your gross income the union dues will.
Email it to us or give us a hardcopy and we will get it to PERB for you!!

Postdocs Concerned About Unionization
Purpose:
This group aims to ensure that postdocs understand the impact of postdoc unionization. We will take actions necessary to educate postdocs and to minimize potentially negative outcomes unionization might have on the postdoc community. We neither support nor disapprove of unionization in general but do oppose efforts to unionize that are not transparent to the postdoc community. Furthermore, we disapprove of dishonest tactics used to unionize.

As I see it, it's not just
August 2, 2006 - 10:28am — Anonymous (not verified)As I see it, it's not just the ~$500/year they will take, but also your negotiating power/opportunity with your advisor- the union will do all salary/benefit negotiations on your behalf, regardless of whether you are a member or not. Therefore, all postdocs will be paid the same (probably on a scale based on postdoctoral year), regardless of publication history, reputation, pedigree, etc. Sounds a little socialistic to me.
Do we really want this here? What's the incentive to excel in a unionized workforce? Do we really want to be represented by people with high-school educations (autoworkers)? What do they really know about postdocs and our career needs/goals? Are we really considered labor?- we have BAs, BSs, MDs and PhDs and therefore are by definition professionals, not labor.
I currently get paid about twice the minimum because I have worked my butt off and built a career. Personally I don't need the union taking that away from me.
Here is the letter to send
August 2, 2006 - 10:33am — Anonymous (not verified)Here is the letter to send to PERB to make sure they know you are not interested (and to make sure the unions don't sign your name to their signature cards illegally). Cut and paste into word, then mail to the address at the top. Isn't your $500-$600 per year (1.15% to 1.5%, depending on where you read it) worth a $0.39 stamp and two minutes of your time?

Dear Sir or Madam,
Regarding PERB case # SF-RR-888-H
I am a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles.
I write to inform you that I do not want to be "represented" by the PRO/UAW union, do not wish to be a member of the PRO/UAW union, and do not support the UAW union in any manner. Please consider my opposition to representation by the PRO/UAW union to be permanent and continuing in nature.
I have never signed a union authorization card, or any other indication of support for the PRO/UAW union. Therefore, any signature card sent by the PRO/UAW to PERB with my name on it is invalid.
Sincerely,
Your name
