We decided we needed more events - social and career oriented. Thus, we opted to have a happy hour starting at 6PM this Friday (Aug 6) at the BrewCo. in Westwood.
As for career events - we decided we needed to get the ball rolling, so we are looking into having a panel of speakers discuss the process of becoming a faculty member / the academic job market. Apparently, a few folks at last night's meeting knew of some new UCLA faculty who may be willing to be on a panel. (There is apparently even one man who was a postdoc here and just transitioned into a faculty position.) We are putting together a list of names of people to approach for this panel. We are shooting to have it in early September and I am looking for a room on campus where we can serve outside food. We want to give people the chance to mingle before/after the panel. We also want to get more people together so that we can get a better sense of what the range of postdocs want in terms of career development.Kristin Ostrow reported that there are quite a few resources at the Career Center to which we as postdocs have access. This is something that we should probably advertise - even though Grad Division is still negotiating a way for us to have access to one-on-one access to the career counselors - something we don't currently have access to as a group.
