The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs for the Biomedical and Life Sciences is working with the School of Medicine and Departments of Molecular, Cellular, & Integrative Physiology (MCIP) and Molecular & Medical Pharmacology (MMP) to provide opportunities for postdocs to develop leadership skills in educational settings.

Skills to be developed:

  • Lecture writing and course development
  • Leading small-group discussions
  • Evaluating effectiveness of lecture content and presentation

The UCLA Bioscience Postdoc Educational Leadership Program has two parts:

Observation

Program postdocs will audit and observe a 3-week block of the graduate course, Molecular Mechanisms in Human Diseases, which covers fundamentals in modern biology, with special emphasis on the implications and relevance to human diseases.  This course was chosen for the program because its broad range of bioscience topics matches with a wide range of postdoc research interests and its variety of instructors provides multiple potential instructional role models for participants.  Witness firsthand how a course is developed and improved and get the opportunity to observe a variety of UCLA faculty lecturers and discussion leaders.  Participants will be assigned a 3-week block of intensive observation and participation during the Fall (or Winter) quarter.

Training

Program postdocs will be offered seminars in course development and lecture writing and leading small-group discussions.  The observations during the audited course block will be used as an example of teaching styles and be the basis for discussion and training.   The postdocs will be each have the opportunity to apply their training by leading a lecture-style review session of the audited material. The program will be offered in the upcoming Fall and Winter quarters; Sept 23 - Dec 9 and Jan 3 - Mar 18. Training seminars will take place just before and after the Fall and Winter academic quarters and journal club leadership will be a 3-week commitment during the Fall or Winter Quarter.
